To ensure you fit the correct size timber joists during your project it is worth having compliant timber structural calculations produced. This will statisfy your Building Control Officer and ensure you do not over specify the size of joists, or worse, under size the floor joists. Over sizing your floor joists is a waste of money. Large timber joists can range from £20 to £80 per joist, so over sizing can waste large sums of money that could be spent else where on your project. Under sizing a floor joist can lead to more serious problems. This can lead to ‘sag’ and ‘cracked ceilings’, where structural remedy works will be required.
